When I Want the Reader to Know Something Is Wrong

One of my favorite moments in writing happens before anything terrible actually happens.

Nothing has gone wrong yet.

No one has disappeared.

No secret has been exposed.

No relationship has completely fallen apart.

And still, something doesn't feel right.
I love that space.

Because sometimes the most effective tension isn't created by showing the reader the danger.

It's created by letting them feel it coming.

There is a difference between surprising a reader and making a reader uneasy.

I enjoy both.

But uneasiness stays with me longer.

A character walks into a room they've entered a hundred times before, but something is different.

A conversation sounds normal, except one answer comes a little too quickly.

Someone says they're fine.

Maybe they even smile when they say it.

But the reader doesn't believe them.

Neither do I.

That feeling is something I think about constantly when I'm writing psychological fiction.

I don't always want to tell you where the danger is.

Sometimes I don't even want you to know whether there is danger.

I just want you to notice that something has shifted.

Maybe it's a detail that doesn't belong.

Maybe it's something a character should have noticed but didn't.

Maybe it's a question nobody wants to answer.

Or maybe it's something much smaller.
Silence.

A look held a second too long.

A door that should have been locked.

A text message left unanswered.

The wrong person knowing the right piece of information.

None of those things necessarily mean anything by themselves.

That's what makes them interesting.

Because once doubt enters a scene, the reader starts doing something I love.

They start participating.

They begin looking for answers.

Why did he say that?

Why didn't she tell him?

Was that really an accident?

Does this person know more than they're admitting?

And suddenly I'm no longer carrying the entire story by myself.

The reader is investigating it with me.

That's especially important to me because I don't want suspense to depend entirely on twists.

I love a good reveal.

I love reaching the point where one piece of information changes how everything before it is understood.

But a twist means more when the reader has felt its presence long before they understand it.

That's the kind of tension I want to create.

I want you to know something is wrong.

I just don't necessarily want you to know what.

There is also something very human about that feeling.

We've all experienced moments when everything appeared normal but didn't feel normal.

Someone tells you everything is okay.
You believe the words.

You don't believe the person saying them.

You walk away from a conversation and replay it later.

Not because of what was said.

Because of what wasn't.

That's where psychological fiction becomes particularly interesting to me.

The threat doesn't always have to be standing outside the door.

Sometimes it's sitting across the table.

Sometimes it's someone you love.

Sometimes it's the person you've trusted more than anyone else.

And sometimes the most frightening possibility is that the character creating the danger doesn't realize they're doing it.

That last one fascinates me.

Because people don't always understand their own motivations.

We justify things.

We minimize things.

We convince ourselves that we're protecting someone when we're really protecting ourselves.

We call something loyalty because admitting it's obsession would require us to see ourselves differently.

We ignore warning signs because acknowledging them would force us to make a decision we aren't ready to make.

That uncertainty gives me room to write characters who aren't simply heroes or villains.

They're people.

And people can be frighteningly good at believing their own explanations.

That's part of what I explore in Six Minutes Late.

The story deals with obsession, guilt, therapy, attraction, and the increasingly dangerous space between what someone feels and what they're willing to admit.

But I never wanted the psychological tension to exist only in the major moments.

I wanted it in the quieter ones too.

A conversation.

A hesitation.

An attraction someone knows they shouldn't entertain.

A decision that feels insignificant when it's made.

Because sometimes the decision that changes everything doesn't feel important at the time.

That's something I'm carrying into the stories I'm working on now as well.

I've become increasingly interested in what happens when the reader recognizes danger before the character does.

You want to warn them.

You want them to leave.

You want them to ask one more question.

And they don't.

So you keep reading.

Not because you don't know something is wrong.

Because you do.

You just don't know how wrong it is yet.

For me, that's suspense.

Not simply hiding information from the reader.

Giving them just enough information to become suspicious.

Then making them turn the page to find out whether they were right.

And sometimes?

They weren't suspicious enough.

When a Character Starts Keeping Secrets From Me

One of the strangest parts of writing a novel is realizing that eventually, the characters stop feeling like people I invented.

They start feeling like people I'm trying to understand.

When I begin a draft, I don't always know exactly who those people are going to become. I may have a name for a character, but that name can change. Sometimes it changes more than once. The same thing can happen with pieces of their history, their relationships, or even the way I originally imagined them.

Revision permits me to keep discovering them.

What matters to me isn't whether I knew everything about a character on page one. What matters is whether, by the time the story takes shape, I understand what makes that person move.

I want to know what they want.

What they're afraid of.

What they refuse to say.

What they tell everyone else.

And, maybe most importantly, what they tell themselves.

Because I think most people carry around more than one version of their lives.

There is the version we show other people.

Then there is the version we live with privately.

Sometimes neither one is completely honest.

That space between the two is where I love to write.

A character might insist they're protecting someone when they're actually protecting themselves.

They might call something love when it has slowly become obsession.

They might believe they've forgiven someone while quietly carrying resentment for years.

They might convince themselves they're doing the right thing because admitting the truth would force them to confront something about themselves they aren't ready to face.

That's where a character becomes interesting to me.

Not when I know everything about them.

When I realize there's still something underneath.

I also don't want readers standing safely outside the story watching everything happen.

I want to put you there.

If a character has to make an impossible decision, I want you sitting inside that decision with them. I want you to understand what they know at that exact moment, feel the pressure they're under, and recognize why one choice might suddenly seem like the only choice available.

That doesn't mean I need you to agree with them.

Actually, sometimes I hope you don't.

If I can make you think,
I wouldn't have done that...
and then, a few pages later,
But I understand why they did...

then the character has started working.

That idea has become important to the way I approach psychological fiction.

I don't want someone to make a terrible decision simply because the plot needs another twist. I want the decision to belong to that person. Their history, fear, love, anger, insecurity, desperation, or obsession should make the choice feel inevitable to them, even when the reader can see the danger.

The same principle carries into the more emotional stories I write.

The Letter He Never Sent isn't built around the same kind of psychological tension as Six Minutes Late, but silence still has consequences.

Words matter.

The words we never say can matter even more.

A conversation that never happens can change a family.

A truth withheld for what seems like the right reason can still cause enormous damage.

A person can love someone deeply and still hurt them.

Someone can mean well and still make the wrong choice.

Those contradictions fascinate me because they're human.

Real people aren't perfectly good or perfectly bad. We contradict ourselves. We make emotional decisions and explain them logically afterward. We forgive things we once believed were unforgivable. We hold onto things we know we should release.

Sometimes we make the right choice for the wrong reason.

Sometimes we make the wrong choice for a reason that makes perfect sense at the time.

That's where I want my characters to live.

And that's why revision matters so much to me.

A first draft might tell me what happened.

Revision helps me understand why.

Sometimes I'll reach a scene believing I know exactly what a character is going to do, and something feels wrong. The dialogue feels forced. Their reaction doesn't fit. The scene might technically move the story forward, but the person inside it no longer feels real.

That's usually when I go backward and start asking questions again.

What does this person actually want?

What are they afraid of losing?

What have they refused to admit?

What would they never do?

And what would have to happen for them to do it anyway?

That last question can change an entire story.

It can also change the character.

Maybe even their name.

That's part of the process for me. I don't need every detail permanently locked before I begin. I'm willing to keep revising until the person on the page feels like someone who could exist beyond it.

I don't think characters have to be likable.

They have to be understandable.

There will be characters I want readers to disagree with.

Characters who frustrate you.

Characters you may trust at the beginning and see very differently by the end.

But whatever they do, I want you close enough to understand the emotional mathematics behind the decision.

Because people rarely destroy something important

While thinking:

I'm about to destroy everything.

They think they're fixing something.

Protecting something.

Saving something.

Escaping something.

Holding onto someone.

Or finally getting something they believe they deserve.

And sometimes they don't realize what their decision actually cost until it's too late.

That's the psychological territory I keep coming back to.

The secret isn't always discovering what happened.

Sometimes the real mystery is discovering why someone believed they had no other choice.

Those are the characters I want to write.

The ones with something underneath the person they show the world.

The ones who force me to revise what I thought I knew about them.

And, hopefully, the ones who make the reader question what they would have done in the same situation.

Because sooner or later, every secret creates pressure.
And eventually...

something has to break.

Where My Stories Begin

People sometimes ask where an idea for a book originates.

I wish I had a more remarkable answer.

The truth is, most of my stories don't start with a complete plot. They don't come with a title, a cast of characters, and a fully mapped-out ending.

Usually, they start with a question.

What if?

What if someone arrived six minutes late?

What if a letter containing everything someone needed to say was never sent?

What if one seemingly small decision changed the direction of several lives?

Those questions are where I tend to find my stories.

I become interested in the consequences.

I find it fascinating that most of us will never realize how many moments in our lives could have turned out differently because of a decision that seemed minor at the time.

Leave the house five minutes earlier.

Answer the phone.

Don't answer it.

Say what you're thinking.

Keep it to yourself.

Trust someone.

Walk away.

Stay.

On their own, these choices can seem ordinary. But put the right people in the right circumstances, and an ordinary decision can become the start of an extraordinary story.

That's where the psychological side of writing becomes especially compelling for me.

I don't just want to know what a character does.

I want to know why.

What happened to this person before the reader met them?

What are they afraid of?

What do they desperately want?

What are they willing to sacrifice to obtain it?

And perhaps most importantly:

What are they capable of convincing themselves is justified?

That's when characters start to feel real to me.

Real people aren't perfectly good or perfectly bad. We contradict ourselves. We make emotional decisions and later justify them logically. We hurt those we love.

We forgive what we once believed was unforgivable.

Sometimes we make the right choice for the wrong reason, or the wrong choice for a reason that makes perfect sense at the time.

I want my characters to live in those uncomfortable spaces.

That's part of what shaped Six Minutes Late.

The thriller elements matter. The tension matters. The mystery matters.

But beneath all that is something I find much more intriguing:

How much can one decision cost?

That’s also why my future books might not look exactly like the ones before.

I want the freedom to explore different characters, relationships, fears, obsessions, mistakes, and consequences. Some stories may be darker. Some may be more emotional. Some may make you uncomfortable.

But I hope they all leave a lingering thought after the last page.

Because sometimes a whole novel begins with just two words:

What if?

And once that question enters my mind, I usually need to find out the answer.

Why I Write Stories That Stay With You

Some stories entertain us for a few hours, while others stay with us long after we’ve closed the book.

Those are the stories I’ve always wanted to write.

When I sit down to start a novel, I’m rarely interested in creating characters who are just good or bad. I’m more interested in what happens beneath the surface, the decisions people make when they are afraid, grieving, desperate, in love, or convinced they are doing the right thing.

That’s especially true with Six Minutes Late. At its core, it’s a psychological thriller, but what interests me most isn’t just what happens. It’s why people make the choices they do, and what those choices cost them.

My writing has taken me into different kinds of stories, from the emotional depths of The Letter He Never Sent to the darker psychological world of Six Minutes Late. The genres may change, but there is one thing I want every book to have in common:

I want it to leave something behind.

A question. A feeling. A character you’re still thinking about the next morning. Maybe even a moment that makes you reconsider what you would have done in the same situation.

That idea has become part of what True North Writings means to me: Stories That Stay With You.

This blog will be another part of that. I’ll share glimpses of the writing process, thoughts behind my books, updates on what I’m working on, and occasionally a look at the decisions shaping a story before anyone else gets to read it.

These editions were created as something more than another version of the books-a way to commemorate how far these stories, and True North Writings, have come.
